Reverse Excessive Facial Hair Naturally with Spearmint Tea
Hi family: Today I wanted to talk about hirsutism and the number one natural treatment for it. First of all, what is hirsutism? Hirsutism is a condition in women that results in excessive growth of dark or coarse hair in a male-like pattern — face, chest and back. With hirsutism, extra hair growth often arises from excess male hormones (androgens), primarily testosterone.
According to the mayo clinic, hirsutism is stiff or dark body hair, appearing on the body where women don’t commonly have hair — primarily the face, chest, lower abdomen, inner thighs and back. People have widely varying opinions on what’s considered excessive.
Please note, before trying any natural treatments, it’s a good idea to see a doctor first just to find out what is actually causing your excessive hair. It could be a variety of causes.
Causes:
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – This condition, which often begins with puberty, causes an imbalance of sex hormones. Over years, PCOS may slowly result in excess hair growth, irregular periods, obesity, infertility and sometimes multiple cysts on the ovaries.
Cushing syndrome – This occurs when your body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol. It can develop from your adrenal glands making too much cortisol or from taking medications such as prednisone over a long period.
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia – This inherited condition is characterized by abnormal production of steroid hormones, including cortisol and androgen, by your adrenal glands.
Tumors – Rarely, an androgen-secreting tumor in the ovaries or adrenal glands can cause hirsutism.
Medications – Some medications can cause hirsutism. These include minoxidil (Minoxidil, Rogaine); danazol, which is used to treat women with endometriosis; testosterone (Androgel, Testim); and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). If your partner uses topical products containing androgens, you can be affected as well, through skin-to-skin contact.
Women who drink spearmint tea twice a day for five days can reduce levels of androgens that can cause hirsutism, a recent article in Phytotherapy Research states.
Turkish researchers discovered the anti-hair-growth properties of spearmint tea from recent findings in Israel that showed spearmint tea significantly reduces male libido, which in turn possibly reduces androgen hormone levels that can lead to hirsutism, according to cosmeticsdesign.com.
Subsequently, female volunteers with hirsutism took part in research tests and were given a cup of boiling water with one heaping teaspoon of dried spearmint leaves for five days during the follicular stage of their menstrual cycle. The results showed an increase in female hormones and a significant decrease in free testosterone in the blood.
Many people grow spearmint in their backyard. You can also buy it online or in your fave health food store. Personally, I saw results in a month’s time. I usually wax my sideburns, and I have noticed that my facial hair is not coming in as quickly. Don’t worry this tea will not affect the hair on your head.
