Day 61 of 365 | The Carnivore Diet Experiment!
Hi friends: It’s day 61 of 365 of the carnivore diet experiment!
So you are eating a steak a day with other meat products. You may be eating three meals a day or one meal a day like me. Have you been wondering if you are eating too much fat? Sometimes I do. I will have my ribeye steak and I see the marbling and sometimes I feel guilty because I am eating fat. There always seems to be talk that eating fat makes us fat.
Why do we need fat?
- Fats are brain food.
- Fasts make food taste so good.
- Fats slows the absorption of food during digestion.
- We need fat to properly absorb protein.
- We need fat in order to absorb fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.
- Fats stimulate the release of bile from the gallbladder.
- Fats are building blocks for our hormones and cell membranes.
- Fats provide a source of long-burning energy.
The part about fats providing a source of long-burning energy. How many of you carnivores are noticing that you have so much energy now? How are you feeling after you eat? Do you feel tired? When sugar was my source of fuel, right after I ate. I felt so tired and I needed a nap. At times I found it difficult to muster up enough energy to get up the stairs after eating a meal packed with glucose.
Lately, I have been questioning how I have been educated about fat and why I was taught to avoid it. I noticed that the more I avoid fat the fatter and unhealthy I got. I want to be clear about what is considered healthy fats.
Saturated and monounsaturated fats such as butter, egg yolks, and coconut oil are more chemically stable and less inflammatory to most people, so they are preferred. Below, you can see some common ways to increase the amounts of fat you eat on a carnivore diet.
Protein
Try to choose the darker meat where possible with poultry, as it is much fattier than white meat. Eating fatty fish is a great way to get omega 3βs in as well.
When it comes to red meat, thereβs not too much to avoid. Cured meats and sausages can sometimes have added sugars.
If you eat steak, try to choose fattier cuts like ribeye. If you like hamburger meat (ground beef), try to choose fattier ratios like 85/15 or 80/20 in some cases.
If you donβt eat pork or beef, you can always substitute lamb in its place since it is very fatty. Replace cuts of meat like bacon with similar, leaner items. Add extra fat if needed.
Today’s dinner was steak!
